Onchain analysis shows limited impact of fraudulent tweet posted by Robinhood's Twitter account
On Wednesday afternoon, around 12:30 PM ET, Twitter users were discussing how Robinhood's verified Twitter account, @Robinhoodapp , with a gold tick, posted a fraudulent tweet. Robinhood has since removed the tweet, but it can be viewed via an archive.org image and various screenshots shared on Twitter.
The tweet read: “Reminder, we are launching our NEW TOKEN ($RBH) on Binance Smart Chain. The live broadcast will be at 12:00 PM ET. You can be among the first to make a purchase at the starting price of $0.0005.” The tweet, which came from the @Robinhoodapp account, also included a link to the Pancakeswap platform, which lists the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) token.
The now-deleted tweet was posted by Robinhood's official Twitter account on Wednesday.
"Oh my god," one Twitter user wrote on Wednesday. “Robinhood's Twitter account has been hacked. They post links to crypto sh** giveaways. No one is safe in this world," the person added. "Looks like the official Robinhood Twitter account has been hacked," another Twitter account commented.
Conor Grogan, a Coinbase employee who tweets about the onchain movement as a hobby, also tweeted about the scam. "Looks like Robinhood's social media has been hacked," an onchain researcher noted on Twitter. "They only got about 10 people to bite the scam token before the link was removed." Grogan added:
So far, the token has only seen [less than] $1,000 in purchases. I think the people who have flocked now have seen the volume increase dramatically and are looking for a thrill.
The @Robinhoodapp Twitter account has yet to tweet about the issue or confirm whether the account has been hacked. The account has a total of 1.1 million social media followers. This story is evolving and may be updated later.
