On April 9, the most powerful wind turbine in the world with 8.8 MW was installed in Aberdeen Bay, north-east of Scotland. This is a record for the European Wind Energy Center (Offshore Wind Deployment Center (EOWDC), writes Offshore wind.
Developer Vattenfall announced that this is the first of 11 turbines that will be built in the bay. The new turbine from manufacturer MHI Vestas is one of two that has been improved with new internal power modes. As a result, the capacity of the two turbines increased from 8.4 MW to 8.8 MW, making it the most powerful turbine in the offshore wind industry to be deployed commercially. Together with 9 turbines with a capacity of 8.4 MW, the wind farm will reach 93.2 MW. The turbines for Scotland's largest offshore wind farm help ensure Vattenfall's vision of becoming fossil fuel-free within a generation is achieved, Vattenfall business manager Gunnar Grabler said.
“The European Wind Energy Centre, through its innovative approach to cost reduction and pioneering technologies, is committed to creating clean and competitive wind energy that will strengthen Scotland's global energy profile.” MHI Vestas has specially developed wind turbines - V164-8.4 MW and V164-8.8 MW - whose height together with the blades is 191 meters. Each blade is 80 meters long. The turbines are being transported by ship from Esbjerg (Denmark) to Aberdeen, where they will be lifted onto installed foundations. MHI Vestas Chief Operating Officer Fleming Aagaard said: “We are very pleased to install the first of 11 turbines in Aberdeen Harbour. Our collaboration with Vattenfall not only brings clean wind energy to the UK, but is also an important opportunity to gain valuable experience in the use of different technologies. We look forward to the successful installation of more turbines.”
