The first trailer for Alien: Romulus showcases director Fede Alvarez's tense and terrifying take on Ridley Scott's beloved sci-fi horror franchise.

The first trailer for Alien: Romulus teases viewers with a horde of goblins terrorizing a spaceship, as well as a new Ripley-like figure. The upcoming film from director Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe) will return audiences to the Alien franchise for the first time since 2017's Alien: Covenant. The new film, with franchise creator Ridley Scott as an executive producer, takes place between the first two films. Kaylee Spaeni and Isabella Merced lead the cast of Alien: Romulus, a story in which young travelers from a distant planet encounter a xenomorph.
Now, ahead of the film's August release, 20th Centuris has released the intense first trailer for Alien: Romulus

The trailer features plenty of gore and an army of goons, as well as a sneak peek at the return of the Xenomorph. Spaeni is also shown with a pulse rifle in a moment that is a clear ode to Sigourney Weaver's Ripley. Following the trailer, Alvarez shared the official poster for the upcoming film in X.

In general, the first two parts of the "Alien" franchise are considered the best. The first film, directed by Scott, is more of a horror film set in space, while James Cameron's sequel elevates the sci-fi action. Subsequent sequels and prequels vary in quality, but Scott is clearly leading the franchise in bold new directions with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. The latter film, in particular, proved controversial, and Alien: Romulus seems to be returning to what made Scott's original film so impressive and beloved by audiences.

Instead of introducing a new planet or biome, the new teaser suggests that Alien: Romulus will mostly take place aboard a spaceship. Scott's first film memorably took place almost entirely aboard a spaceship, with the crew members being "joined" by a xenomorph, and this contributed to the film's eerie and claustrophobic atmosphere. While there's plenty of action (and an increase in Aliens, given the number of facelifts), Alien: Romulus certainly feels like it leans more towards horror than the last installments.

Alvarez's work on the 2013 remake of The Sinister Dead suggests that audiences may be in for a particularly gory and gory take on the franchise. To that end, Merced teased in an interview with THR earlier this year that she was part of a scene in Alien: Romulus that was "so disgusting" that her fellow cast members had to look away. It remains to be seen how audiences and critics will receive Alien: Romulus, but a return to its roots is probably just what the franchise needs right now to bring the story to a new generation.
