The costs of maintaining an army have always been in the first place - either you support your own or feed someone else's...It is very difficult to surprise anyone with modern technologies. In any industry, almost every day there are almost revolutionary discoveries of new technologies and the army is no exception. People and technologies are responsible for protecting our security, and if technologies are “timeless” and constantly being improved, then the presence of the human factor is only a matter of time. Soldiers who do not age and do not lose skills and, most importantly, do not need to spend time and money on their training.
In fact, just recently, Defense Minister Son Yong Moo announced that from 2024, not only people, but also robots will be accepted into the army. If this experiment is successful, gradually South Korea plans to completely robotize its army. The most interesting thing is that this desire of the South Korean authorities to put robots and combat vehicles guarding the borders is in no way connected with “show-offs” in the field of future technologies, everything is much more banal - this is a demographic crisis that is leading to a sharp decline in the population, which in in turn, has an extremely negative impact on the number of people of military age. But seriously, robots have been protecting law and order and the law for quite some time, starting with the simplest unmanned aerial vehicles that are engaged in reconnaissance and data collection, and not only for army purposes.
