Sonic 3

Sonic 3 director Jeff Fowler confirms that filming has wrapped on the upcoming film and teases the next character in the franchise. Based on SEGA's hit video game franchise, Fowler brought the lightning-fast anthropomorphic hedgehog to life for the first time in 2020. Having grossed over $319 million worldwide, the success of the first film would not only lead to additional sequels, but also a future spin-off television series featuring Idris Elba's Knuckles character.

In the image, the director can be seen holding a giant firecracker featuring Shadow's character, who was first teased in the post-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. This latest announcement also follows a recent announcement from franchise star James Marsden, who confirmed that principal photography has wrapped.

Originally created in the early 1990s as a response to Nintendo's bestseller Super Mario Bros., the original Sonic the Hedgehog game set the stage for what would later become a massive game franchise featuring a huge cast of dozens of characters. While the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog film mostly focuses on the franchise's first characters, namely Sonic and Jim Carrey's Doctor Robotnik, the 2022 sequel will later feature Knuckles the echidna and Tails the two-tailed fox.

In comparison, the new character Shadow was a relatively late addition to the game series, first appearing 10 years after Sonic's debut. First introduced in 2001's Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow was never meant to be a lasting character, and his first appearance in the game was also meant to be his last. However, the character's brooding and enigmatic demeanor quickly became a fan favorite of the franchise, and he later returned in several games and even earned his own spinoff of the same name in 2005.

Although Shadow the Hedgehog shares much in common with his blue counterpart, he is notable for his tragic origins and dark demeanor, potentially hinting that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a much darker story than the previous films. Shadow's relationship with Sonic, often at odds with Sonic's restless optimism in the games, has often been compared to DC's Batman and Superman. Given this dynamic, it will be interesting to see how the couple's relationship develops in the upcoming film.
