The investigative bodies of Estonia believe that the windows that were broken in the cars of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and one journalist acted on the instructions of the special services of the Russian Federation. 10 people were detained in this case.
Estonian security authorities suspect that Russia is behind the attacks on the cars of Interior Minister Lauri Läenemets and one of the Estonian journalists. In this case, since December, 10 people have already been detained, who, according to the investigation, acted on behalf of the Russian special services, the Estonian Security Police (KaPo) reported on Tuesday, February 20.
The report does not specify the name of the journalist whose car, like the car of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, had its windows broken at the beginning of December, but the Delfi news portal writes that it is about Andrii Shumakov, the editor-in-chief of the Russian-language version of this publication.
Hybrid operation against the security of Estonia
According to KaPo, the data collected as part of the criminal proceedings indicate that the "hybrid operation against the security of the Republic of Estonia", which was coordinated by the Russian special services, was aimed at instilling fear and tension in the Estonian society.
The message also states that the suspects, among other things, were engaged in the desecration of memorials in Estonia.
At the request of the prosecutor's office, six detainees were taken into custody. According to Estonian state prosecutor Trijnu Olev, the detainees include both Russian and Estonian citizens, some of whom have two passports. The head of Estonia's Internal Security Service, Margo Palloson, clarified that most of them had previous criminal records, were recruited through social networks, and received "some financial reward" for carrying out the attacks.
In connection with this case, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the temporary representative of Russia in Estonia.
