The Russian authorities "definitely will not" ban and criminalize legislation in the field of abortion. This was stated by the head of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko.
"I am absolutely sure that no prohibitions, pressure, campaigning, criminalization of legislation in this area can and will not be able to solve this problem. The state will definitely not go down this path," said Matvienko (quote from "Interfax").
She noted that Russia "already has an experience that ended with sad consequences: it's an illegal service market, cave-like quality, increasing female mortality, we will definitely not go down this path."
According to Matviyenko, women "cannot be completely deprived of the right to choose." At the same time, Radfeda's speaker expressed the opinion that abortions should be performed only for medical reasons and in case of violence against women. "We are moving towards this, but, of course, the efficiency of this work must be increased," she said.
At the end of October, Veronika Vlasova, a member of the State Duma Committee on Health Care, proposed to allow women to perform abortions only in state clinics up to eight weeks of pregnancy and with the consent of the child's father, if the marriage with her is registered. If it is about a minor, then with the consent of one of the parents.
In early November, the Ministry of Health of Crimea announced that private clinics in the region voluntarily refused to perform abortions. Subsequently, a similar measure was announced in several other regions - Tatarstan, Mordovia, Kursk region.
According to the BBC, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia proposed to the Speaker of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, to legislate a ban on artificial termination of pregnancy in private clinics.
The head of the Russian Orthodox Church also proposed to introduce at the federal level a ban on encouraging women to have an abortion. In his opinion, "the population can be increased simply as if by the movement of a magic wand", and if you "learn" to dissuade women from abortion, "the statistics will immediately go up".
