Keanu Reeves is set to return as DC's Hellblazer after a few years, and his Constantine 2 recently received its first update from the producer in months.
The DC Universe is being developed by James Gunn and Peter Safran, and while John Constantine has yet to be announced as one of the DCU's canon characters, Hellblazer is set to return to the big screen. Keanu Reeves' Constantine 2 is already in the works and will be a DC Elseworlds movie, and a new update on the project has been released.
Speaking to Comicbook.com, the film's producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura shared his hopes for the Keanu Reeves sequel moving forward, comparing it to the recent superhero film Madam Web. Bonaventura said he "hopes so because it's a great character" when asked about the Constantine 2 movement. His comparison between John Constantine and Madame Web was that both characters are quite unique and original.
I hope so because it's a great character. Great in the comics and it was great doing that first movie. This is such an alternative type of character. That's what really attracted me to Madame Web, that quirkiness of the character, that idea that she's going to go blind and that she's going to become this other thing, something more, that was really appealing.
Reeves first played the DC demon slayer in 2005's Constantine. Since then, the actor has not stopped trying to create the second part and return as his character. After much anticipation, the announcement in September 2022 that Keanu Reeves' Constantine 2 was finally in the works shocked fans. Now, the film has received a number of updates that indicate the direction it is heading.
The first major detail about the second installment is that it will be an Elseworlds movie, meaning that Reeves' version of the character will not be part of James Gunn's new DC Universe. Gunn's comments about Elseworlds also raised the bar for the film. According to the DCU creative chief, "it's going to have to be something really special for us to tell this story outside of our normal continuity, and to spend the money to do it." The way Constantine 2 is progressing, it looks like the movie has a good chance of being something special.
Also, it became known that "Constantine 2" will take into account the age of Keanu Reeves, showing what the young John Constantine does. "Constantine 2" will also be a true R-rated film. Director Francis Lawrence revealed that while the original film was being developed as an R-rated film, the studio had to re-make it PG-13 on a whim rather than using the darker tone of the original, which would have played into the hands of the film. Now, with creative freedom and no need to keep the larger DC universe in mind, Constantine 2 can give Reeves the dark supernatural story he deserves.
Although the film's original director Francis Lawrence is returning to helm the sequel, his project only has one confirmed cast member from the first film. At the time of this story's publication, Keanu Reeves was the only actor confirmed to be returning for Constantine 2.
With the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes ending last year, a sequel appears to be moving forward, but no other cast members have been announced yet.
However, it wouldn't be shocking if Peter Stormare returns as Lucifer. After all, it was Stormare who first got the sequel rumors rolling back in November 2020, when he stated that a sequel was sort of in the works at Warner Bros. Despite this, there is no official word yet if his Lucifer will appear in the upcoming film.
With Gunn's DC Universe currently a top priority for DC Studios, time will tell how the production process for the exciting sequel starring Keanu Reeves plays out, as it may be some time before tangible steps like filming take place. For now, everyone who is waiting for the upcoming film will have to be patient and wait for news about "Constantine 2".
