"Water underpins prosperity through health, education, food and energy security, employment, resilient ecosystems, and equitable sharing of these benefits contributes to peace," Richard Connor, editor-in-chief of the United Nations World Water Report, told ABC News.
The international agency's report aims to show how tensions over access to water are leading to scarcity and stress over the vital resource, exacerbating conflicts around the world.
According to the United Nations State of the World's Water Report 2024, released on World Water Day, access to clean and safe water is the “great glue” of our world and is critical to strengthening peace.
Globally, 2.2 billion people still lack access to safe drinking water and 3.5 billion people lack access to safe sanitation, according to the report.
