In one of the western provinces of China, Xinjiang, the air temperature dropped sharply from positive values to minus 52.3 degrees Celsius, which led to the freezing of birds in water bodies. This was the lowest rate in the last 64 years, reports the Reuters news agency.
In the city of Tuerhong in Fuyun County, the temperature dropped to minus 51.5 degrees, which was recorded back on January 21, 1960.
According to China's Ministry of Transport, 43 sections of roads in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces were closed due to bad weather conditions. The National Weather Service has warned that severe frosts will last until February 22. Cold weather is also expected in northeastern China, as well as in the central provinces of Hubei and Hunan in the south of the country.
